Israel has asked the European Union to back the East Med Pipeline project which would connect the natural gas fields in Israel and Cyprus to the European market through Greece, Kathimerini understands. Addressing the European Commission’s new energy chief Maros Sefcovic during an event organized by the Italian EU presidency earlier this week, Israel’s Energy Minister Silvan Shalom said that the pipeline would ensure that European consumers get the cheapest possible gas. Construction of the pipeline appeared to have fallen out of favor because of technical and economic concerns. Asked about Shalom’s comments, Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said that a viability study was underway to determine whether such a project is financially as well as geologically feasible.
